Why I Wonât Be Reading Your Cover Letter - Work It Daily Is your cover letter ready to be sent out? Before you say yes, read this... A little while back, we had an open position we were trying to fill. I was amazedâ"or should I say appalledâ"at the blanket responses we received from job seekers. Potential candidates sent us cover letters describing experience they possessed that was completely irrelevant to our opening; it was the same as someone having a degree in veterinary medicine but seeking employment as an IT director. Did these job seekers really think going on and on for paragraphs about irrelevant experience was going to make me want to read their resumeâ"or even more soâ"interview them? I think I understand the dilemma here: Truly active job seekers are sending out countless cover letters as quickly as humanly possibleâ"probably exasperated by the sheer volume of applications they feel pressured to submit. Itâs not a shot-in-the-dark game, people. Or a game of numbers. I truly donât believe itâs a situation where you have to submit 200 applications to receive two call-backs. What it comes down to is a matter of focus and relevancy. Can you make the correlation between your experience and career background and what the employer truly needs? Iâll give you a perfect example. We occasionally will have openings for certified or professional resume writers. We place an ad for the opening online with some very specific requirements and ask that the candidate respond with valid and convincing reasons why he or she would be the best fit. Some candidates go on and onâ"almost endlesslyâ"about having authored books, written articles for medical journals, or their technical writing experience. None of which has anything in common with resume writingâ"other than the word âwriting.â This is frustrating to hiring managers as they are wading through hundreds of job applications. It almost seems like a waste of time. I find myself thinking, âWhy canât they tell me what I need to know?â I specify in the ad that I need to know about criteria A, B, and Câ"and whether you possess those skills. RBG The Movie That Brought The Meme To Life For Me On November 11, 2016, I woke up with newfound resolve. It had been a trying week for many Americans. That Wednesday, I rode a silent subway to work. I entered a deadly quiet, mora than half-empty office, wzu siche the people who had elected to come to work wore somber faces. The woman who sat in the cubicle behind mine quietly sobbed for the better part of the day. That Friday, though, I welches going to do something about it. I set up recurring donations to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. In the shower, I came up with anotherbei plan Every day, I would think, What can I do for Ruth Bader Ginsburg today?Truth be told, I didnt get very far. There wasnt much I could do for RBG. She didnt need my money, and its not like I could give much to her anyway. I briefly considered writing to her offering to quit my job to be her unpaid personal assistant, before realizing that she probably already had many assistants who were actually trained in the line of work and far more skilled than I. So, I settled for sending positive thoughts her way.RBG, of course, is not a story about how I coped with my grief over the 2016 election. And while it does touch on the election, its not really a story about that, either. Its the tale of how one brilliant, talented woman changed the country for all Americans.The film takes us through Ginsbergs childhood and her years at Cornell, Harvard, and Columbia. We binnensee her relationship with her mother, who taught her to be brave and not shirk from her own intellect. We see her thrive as one of nine women in a class of 500 at Harvard Law School and make the Law Review. And we learn how, despite graduating at the top of her class at Columbia where she transferred to be with her husband, Marty she had difficulty finding a job after law school because of her gender. We watch her triumph in the key cases Ginsburg argued before the Supreme Court, including Frontiero vs. Richardson, in which S harron Frontiero, a United States Air Force lieutenant, was denied benefits for a husband, though the wives of men in uniform could receive them. In Weinberger v. Wiesenfeld, Ginsburg argued on behalf of widower Stephen Wiesenfeld, who was denied his late wifes Social Security benefits, which he needed to raise his infant son, because only widows and not widowers were entitled to these benefits. This represented a key to Ginsburgs strategy arguing that gender discrimination can apply to both men and women, and thus challenging the assumptions of Justices who had never previously considered their inherent privilege, nor the complications of affording people rights on account of their gender.Interviews with childhood friends, former classmates and colleagues, and Ginsburgs children bring the larger-than-life justice alive. Ginsburgs friend, Gloria Steinman, speaks to how Ruth the lawyer and later judge used to the tool she had to change history the law. Even people who disagree with h er politically, including Orrin Hatch, describe their admiration for the Justice, and the late Antonin Scalias son, Eugene, offers insight into his fathers friendship with Ginsburg. Despite having completely divergent views, the odd couple maintained a close friendship until his death.RBG is also a love story. We see how a love affair that started when Ruth and Marty were undergraduates at Cornell continued until Martys death just before his death, Marty wrote to his wife, You are the only person I have loved in my life, setting aside, a bit, parents and kids and their kids, and I have admired and loved you almost since the day we first met. Her husband wasnt just her companion, we learn he was also her greatest advocate, the tax lawyer who saw his greatest job as ensuring that Ruth achieved success in hers. As the extrovert foil to her introvert, he used his network and charisma to make koranvers she had a spot on President Bill Clintons list of potential Supreme Court nominees, kn owing that once she got into the presidents office, she would earn the seat through her own intelligence and qualificationswhich, of course, she did. (Clinton is interviewed in the film as well.)Intercut among interviews and historical footage, including the early days of Marty and Ruths courtship, is footage of Ginsburgs Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings, in which she narrates her story. We also see current-day scenes of her and her granddaughter, Clara, looking at pictures from Claras Harvard Law School graduation. Clara notes that her class of 2017 was the first to have an even split between men and womena far cry from her grandmothers class of less than two percent women and a symbol of how far her efforts have carried.I was lucky enough to watch a QA with Betsy West, one of the films directors, after the viewing ended. West revealed that without their persistency, the film would never have been made she and co-director Julie Cohen asked Ginsberg if she would be willing to par ticipate in the film several times, and her answer was consistently not yet, before she finally agreed. Thats right We get to see interviews with the subject herself, along with shots of her high-intensity workouts and reaction to seeing to Kate McKinnon portray her on SNL.When we left the theater, my boyfriend asked me if I wanted a Notorious RBG shirt. I have a birthday coming up, I reminded him.

You want to be sure they can get the job done and even surpass your expectations. You want to be sure that they fit in with most of the people that are already employed and mesh into your company culture. Lastly, you want to be sure they are taking this job for the long-run. At the very least you expect them to stay with the company for at least two years. So in the process of looking for all of these things, the educational hintergrund and past work experiences of your top candidates is bound to come up. As an employer, what should you place more importance on educational background or experience?Its a question that both job seekers and employers alike have asked themselves. If theres a most common answer to this often-asked question than the answer is it depends. It depends on what the job i s, what kind of candidate you are looking for, what you expect out of the future employee and what you think is most important as an employer. A lot of employers automatically require their candidates to have a four-year degree to fill their positions. However, is it always necessary? Can someone who has a good deal of work experience, but no degree fill that role as well? By placing this requirement in your job post, you may be missing out on a good deal of talent. What you should do before you make an educational requirement is to ask yourself a few questions. What are the expected behaviors of this candidate? What abilities and knowledge must they posses? What are the most important skills? Then ask yourself if those requirements are attainable without a degree.The president of Reliability Careers John Ha tackled this same debate a while back. In trying to answer the question, he took a look at what most employers associate with candidates, or employees, that have a degree. For o ne, most assume that they know how to analyze problems, conduct research and produce solutions. A great deal of higher education is composed of this specific skill. No matter what degree a candidate has, they worked hard to get it and probably exhibited these skills.Its also assumed that they can learn complex subject matters and are motivated individuals since they graduated and earned their degree. However, dont candidates that possess a great deal of work experience likely have these characteristics as well? Perhaps you have a candidate that has had two jobs previously and no degree, and a candidate that has a degree but no experience. If the candidate with no degree worked in your industry before, does their experience put them above the candidate with a degree but virtually no experience in the field? This candidate has proven that they can get the job done, and have before. Cancelling out job seekers like this one alienates you from a great pool of talent.Ultimately, as the hi ring manager or employer, the decision is yours to make. Most desirable would be a candidate with a good educational background and experience. Its important though that you weigh each option and decide if a degree is truly a requirement or just a desire you seek in your candidates.
